Second Battle of Camden (April 25, 1781)

April 25, 1781, on a sandy eminence one mile north of Camden, South Carolina the American Southern Department Army, commanded by Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene camped in battle order awaiting an attack from the British garrison at fortified Camden. Col. Francis Lord Rawdon commanded South Carolina's Crown forces and sallied out of Camden and gave Greene's forces battle on Hobkirk's Hill. After a 15 minutes fight, Lord Rawdon's troops controlled the hill, but this victory was purchased at an unmaintainable price. Greene and Rawdon faced off again over the next two weeks until the British withdrew from Camden towards Charleston, leaving its interior strongholds over South Carolina to fall in the Spring and Summer of 1781.

The development of the City of Camden covered this important Southern Campaign battlefield, but its roadways make following both army's deployments accessible. This site provides American Revolutionary War researchers with primary sources, maps and information on the commanders, troops, units, tactics, logistics and weapons used fighting to recover South Carolina from Crown rule in 1781.

The Kershaw County Historical Society has installed historical marker signs and published a street map and guide brochure to follow the deployments and maneuvers of the American and British troops at the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill. The driving tour begins at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site. Please come and spend a few peaceful hours where the British spent a rough year.
