| The
Historic Mapping Congress A group of individuals interested in history and preservation of our common past have created a way for the public to participate in the location of past places. The group organized the Historic Mapping Congress to create a large-scale digital library of historic geographic information. They designed a means to acquire information from the public and give that information back to the public. The Historic Mapping Congress will collect data on historic geography so as to provide tangible evidence to depict historic settlement, transportation and demographic infrastructure. With this library it will be feasible to track the migrations of individuals, the movements of armies, and the locations of forgotten historic sites or even compare modern maps with historical geography. This will help extend the narrative of how important the geography is important to our understanding of history and heritage. This new not-for-profit organization will establish user protocols and permanently manage the electronic library that houses the shared and easily accessible information related to geography. Data can be entered by anyone with information about such sites and may include GIS professionals, historians, preservationists, landowners, planning officials, surveyors, foresters, hikers, or any interested member of the public. New developments in GIS software will make the library universally accessible to anyone without extensive training or an expensive software investment. This organization will make accessible historic maps, plats, and features placed on a variety of modern base maps such as topography, imagery or roads. Also available will be documentary and evidence of the historical sites and events which are located on these maps. Our goal is to furnish this information as web services via the Internet to educate and inform fellow citizens about their culture and history; and raise awareness of important areas of our land, and make that information thoroughly accessible to all levels of government/public servants/voters in order to protect and preserve our remaining cultural assets. We seek interested individuals who are willing to serve on committees to facilitate the software, human interfaces and collection of historical documents for this public participatory GIS system. |
Historic Mapping Congress Charlotte, NC – Central Piedmont Community College on November 21, 2009 - Please join us for the 3d meeting of the Historic Mapping Congress to continue to work to define, develop, market, and implement an on-line GIS based historic document system. Jeff Bright and Bill Moore have worked on our mission statement and goads. We will have a charter, proposed by-laws to get formally organized, minutes, technical committee reports (this is the exciting business), elect officers, and to talk about our PR, public interfaces, and hopefully to plan to begin a limited beta test of this public system. We will meet at the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) at the
Levine Technology (LT) building on Central Campus. This building is
at the corner of Charlottetowne Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue and the
street address is 1125 Charlottetowne Avenue, Charlotte NC 28204. Our
meeting rooms are located in the LT 1110 suite on the ground floor of
the LT building. Please note that this meeting is not being held at
the Levine Campus, but in the Levine Technology building on Central
